Victor Siu assumed the position of Program Manager with the Purple Silk Music Education Foundation (PSMEF) in 2005 after serving for six years as a music coach for the Great Wall Youth Orchestra and Chorus. Under the direction of PSMEF’s Artistic Director, Sherlyn Chew, he helps coordinate logistical and artistic operations for the organization’s music education programs at Laney College and in the Oakland public schools. In this capacity, he is responsible for recruiting and auditioning students for the youth orchestra and chorus. He also helps select repertoire for the orchestra’s concerts and special events. In addition, he is responsible for managing PSMEF’s school residency programs, supervising artists and serving as a liaison with the principal and teachers at each site. As a result of his work with the youth orchestra, Mr. Siu has received many invitations to perform locally and nationally, on radio and television and for heads of state. He has provided musical accompaniment for Chinese opera vocalist and PSMEF student Tyler Thompson for a variety of events, including the Tenth Anniversary Concert at Calvin Simmons Theatre in Oakland and a Fall 2005 performance on ABC Television’s Good Morning America show in New York. In May 2007, Mr. Siu was invited by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to perform at the nation’s capitol for a meeting with China’s Vice Premier, Madame Wu Yi. Mr. Siu’s background includes a life-long study of both Western classical music and Chinese music. He holds a BA in Music (with an emphasis on jazz piano), with a Minor in Chinese, from San Francisco State University (SFSU).He is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. In addition to his work with PSMEF, he conducts private music lessons for students. Victor plans to pursue advanced degrees in music so that he can continue to provide music education to youth.
